Enrico Motta (Director, Founder)
Prof. Enrico Motta is Professor of Knowledge Technologies at the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi) of The Open University in UK. He is one of the leading scientists in the world in the area of Semantic Technologies and the author of more than 200 refereed publications. Over the years, Prof. Motta has obtained about £7M in research funding and has led KMi's contribution to numerous high-profile projects, such as the EPSRC-funded Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration on Advanced Knowledge Technologies (AKT), as well as several EU-funded ones. In particular he was the Co-ordinator and Scientific Director of the ¤14M NeOn FP6 Integrated Project, which has produced a number of innovative technologies to enable efficient ontology engineering in a Semantic Web-centric context.
Prof. Motta has acted as advisor on strategic research programmes to several national and international organizations in a variety of countries, including US, UK, Italy, The Netherlands, Austria, and Estonia. He has also collaborated with several major organizations, including Nokia, Rolls-Royce, Fiat, Philips, and the United Nations, to name just a few.
Prof Motta is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Web Semantics and IEEE Intelligent Systems, and Founder and Director of the International Summer School on Ontology Engineering and the Semantic Web. Together with Tom Heath he won the Semantic Web Challenge at the 2007 International Semantic Web Conference and, in collaboration with members of his research group, he has won the best paper award for the last two years at the 2008 and 2009 Asian Semantic Web Conferences.

Asun Gomez-Perez (Co-Director)
Prof. Dr. Asunción Gómez-Pérez is Full Professor at the Univ. Politécnica de Madrid. She is the Director of the Artificial Intelligence Department (2008) and Director or the OEG at UPM (1995).
She has a B.A. in Computer Science (1990), M.S.C. on Knowledge Engineering (1991), Ph.D. in Computer Sciences (1993) and MS.C. on Business Administration (1994). She was visiting (1994-1995) the Knowledge Systems Laboratory at Stanford University. She also was the Executive Director (1995-1998) of the Artificial Intelligent Laboratory at the School.
Her main research areas are: Ontological Engineering, Semantic Web and Knowledge Management. She led at UPM the following EU projects: Ontoweb, Esperonto, Knowledge Web, NeOn, SEEMP, OntoGrid, ADMIRE, DynaLearn, SemSorGrid4Env, SEALS and MONNET. She coordinated OntoGrid and now she is coordinating SemSorGrid4Env and SEALS. She is also leading at UPM projects funded by Spanish agencies. The most relevants are: España Vitual, WEBn+1, GeoBuddies and the Spanish network on Semantic Web.
She has published more than 150 papers and she is author of one book on Ontological Engineering and co-author of a book on Knowledge Engineering. She has been co-director of the summer school on Ontological Engineering and the Semantic Web since 2003 up to now. She was program chair of ASWC'09, ESWC'05 and EKAW'02 and co-organiser of many workshops on ontologies. She reviews papers in many conferences and journals.

Mathieu d'Aquin (Vice-Director)
Mathieu d'Aquin is a research fellow at the Knowledge Media institute (KMi) of the Open University in Milton Keynes, UK. His research activities focus on the Semantic Web, and especially on methods and tools to build intelligent applications relying on formalised knowledge distributed online. Mathieu has in particular been involved in the development of the Watson Semantic Web search engine, and in many applications of its APIs.
As part of several projects, Mathieu has worked on many aspects of building and exploiting the Semantic Web, including ontology building, ontology modularization, ontology matching, ontology evolution, ontology publication, etc. More recently, he has been working on aspects related to the use of semantic technologies and the Semantic Web for monitoring and managing online personal information, as well to the realisation of applications producing and consuming linked data (see the data.open.ac.uk project for example).

Oscar Corcho (Vice-Director)
Oscar Corcho, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Departamento de Inteligencia Artificial, Facultad de Informática, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). He belongs to the Ontology Engineering Group at UPM.
Previously, he worked as a Marie Curie research fellow at the University of Manchester, and was a research manager at iSOCO. He holds a degree in Computer Science, an MSc in Software Engineering and a PhD in Computational Science and Artificial Intelligence from UPM. He was awarded the Third National Award by the Spanish Ministry of Education in 2001.
His research activities are focused on Semantic e-Science, Semantic Web and Ontological Engineering. In these areas, he has participated in a number of EU projects (SemsorGrid4Env, ADMIRE, OntoGrid, Esperonto, Knowledge Web and OntoWeb), and Spanish R&D projects (CENITS mIO! and Buscamedia), and has also participated in privately-funded projects like ICPS (International Classification of Patient Safety), funded by the World Health Organisation, and HALO, funded by Vulcan Inc.
He has published two books, “Ontological Engineering" and "A layered declarative approach to ontology translation with knowledge preservation", and more than 50 papers in journals, conferences and workshops. He usually participates in the organisation or in the programme committees of relevant international conferences and workshops. In 2011 he will be the programme chair of the KCAP conference.
